Thomas E. Bowman Fund for Student Support in Economics
The Thomas E. Bowman Fund for Student Support in Economics is awarded in recognition of a distinguished economics student with a commitment to public service in the graduating class. The prize is awarded annually in the spring, and includes a $1000 cash award.
Tom graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in economics. This award was established in 2013 by the Better Business Bureau of Oakland to recognize Tom's years of service.
Applications are evaluated by members of the Economics Undergraduate Committee. The Committee takes into consideration the following:
- A well-rounded academic transcript with a diverse set of courses from various departments.
- Outstanding extracurricular contributions to the Department or University.
- Participation or interest in public service.
- For the 2024 award: Must earn degree in Fall 2023, Spring 2024, or Summer 2024.
- Applicants must have a major GPA of 3.75 or higher (as of Fall 2021).

Steve Goldman Memorial Prize/Departmental Citation
The Steve Goldman Memorial Prize/Departmental Citation is awarded to an undergraduate for academic excellence. The prize is awarded at the annual commencement ceremony in the spring, and includes a $2000 cash award. There is no application for this award.
Mark A. Schimbor Prize in Economics
The Mark A. Schimbor Prize in Economics is awarded to an undergraduate honors student in the Economics major based upon submission of the most distinguished honors thesis. Prospective awardees shall be nominated by their faculty thesis sponsor, and a winner will be chosen by the Economics Undergraduate Committee. Recipients shall demonstrate a high level of academic distinction. The prize is awarded at the annual commencement ceremony in the spring, and includes a $2000 cash award.
The Mark A. Schimbor Prize in Economics was established in 2012 by Robert and Sue O'Donnell in memory of their friend and fellow Cal alumnus, Mark Schimbor, who passed away on February 5, 2012. Mark earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Cal in 1967.
